I've been interested in the chemistry that goes into art, thus the lithography, zone system shooting and what not. I have to develop film that I shot for Erika, sticking with 120 asa with my lovely twin lens. Anyway, my light meter decided to stop working and the damn thing is so old that finding a battery for it would mean some antiquing. Lame. <div>I can't wait till this whole thesis nightmare is over and I can get to everything else I want to do. Also, it's funny how art school can get in the way of making art. How does that keep happening?</div>farnanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05439608091860809567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7261257231768432538.post-13232158641337009902011-03-25T11:08:00.001-07:002011-03-27T12:47:26.272-07:00things havings beens goings ons<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-63wDr41La0I/TY9dbXUQ-UI/AAAAAAAAAQY/5oVYSBUDQXM/s1600/Photo%2B18.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-63wDr41La0I/TY9dbXUQ-UI/AAAAAAAAAQY/5oVYSBUDQXM/s200/Photo%2B18.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588788387286939970" /></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u4cAELIoKoM/TY9dWwNycVI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/BOhx7CmzDow/s1600/Photo%2B17.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u4cAELIoKoM/TY9dWwNycVI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/BOhx7CmzDow/s200/Photo%2B17.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588788308071313746" /></a><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vTzz7iKZej0/TY9dMyRy1II/AAAAAAAAAQI/kfPa-bRCBfE/s1600/Photo%2B15.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vTzz7iKZej0/TY9dMyRy1II/AAAAAAAAAQI/kfPa-bRCBfE/s320/Photo%2B15.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588788136826295426" /></a><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><u>You know you want to wear one...</u></span></div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vTzz7iKZej0/TY9dMyRy1II/AAAAAAAAAQI/kfPa-bRCBfE/s1600/Photo%2B15.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rQI3Y-cyxtA/TYzbCefzEAI/AAAAAAAAAQA/U6GFtMBV8Ew/s1600/houseofsaints.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 274px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rQI3Y-cyxtA/TYzbCefzEAI/AAAAAAAAAQA/U6GFtMBV8Ew/s400/houseofsaints.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588082073252597762" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Work in progress for "House of Saints", Charcoal and pastel on paper, 18 by 24.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yPKQeX5j8IM/TYza7J1OVnI/AAAAAAAAAP4/gKx53CAe5vw/s1600/bus.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 243px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yPKQeX5j8IM/TYza7J1OVnI/AAAAAAAAAP4/gKx53CAe5vw/s320/bus.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588081947446236786" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">18 by 24 monotype from "The Hanscom Sisters". bus interior. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f9d9Fl0MUSk/TYza1q8ocnI/AAAAAAAAAPw/pg1NBmI_qyc/s1600/augustseven.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f9d9Fl0MUSk/TYza1q8ocnI/AAAAAAAAAPw/pg1NBmI_qyc/s320/augustseven.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588081853256462962" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">This is the current state of the multi-color lithograph, "August, Seven in the Morning" (heaven opened up but hell came down). This is something that I have noticed over the last couple of years, the reach of this trend, of course, has even made its way to alumni and even some of the guys in my class. The most frequently used face is Ted Bundy's and then Manson, maybe Ed Gein, never saw Gacey. I think that is because both Bundy and Manson were very sexually charged and frustrated characters, there is also a level of misogyny (too many male painters are, most with not enough balls to come out and say it, but this is the world we live in). <o:p></o:p></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style=" ;font-family:Georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> So I was thinking…<o:p></o:p></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style=" ;font-family:Georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> <o:p></o:p></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style=" ;font-family:Georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> I recently came to terms with my work and its relation o feminism. That is to say, my interest, conceptually, is placing women in their space and suspending them from their roles as women, and showing them as humans first. This often leads to figures in indeterminate locations and making them so vague the viewer wouldn’t even realize that he is looking at a woman. Good. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style=" ;font-family:Georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> So I am going to have my own rebuttal to all of this boy’s club bullshit that brings us to….<o:p></o:p></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style=" ;font-family:Georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> <o:p></o:p></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" align="center" style="text-align:center"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" align="center" style="text-align:center"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia;">Aileen Wuornos was executed in 2002 for the murder and robberies of seven men. Why her? Glad you asked. The ‘typical’ woman serial killer kills folks she knows, in their homes or hers, and kills by ways of stabbing, poisoning, or drowning. Not Aileen, she was a hooker and began killing her Johns in cold blood and stealing their cars- killing strangers outdoors in cold blood with a gun. The movie about her came out really soon after her execution, in the scene of her first victim, and according to her testimony in court, the first killing was in self-defense. A day or two before her execution, she admitted that the first victim was not self-defense at all. The movie had already been shot at this point; the producers were just waiting for her death before releasing the picture. She wasn’t some damsel in distress gone rogue, no black widow, she didn’t even like men, she was a killer, plain and simple. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" align="center" style="text-align:center"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" align="center" style="text-align:center"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" align="center" style="text-align:center"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia;"><br /></span></p> <!--EndFragment-->farnanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05439608091860809567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7261257231768432538.post-29436601710390680662011-02-28T12:48:00.001-08:002011-02-28T12:57:04.687-08:00works in progress and the frustration they entail<div style="text-align: center;">Your comments, criticisms, and suggestions are welcomed and needed. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ogJOOebU2Ig/TWwK-5n7GsI/AAAAAAAAAOA/pgrAYMTLN60/s1600/firstofthree.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ogJOOebU2Ig/TWwK-5n7GsI/AAAAAAAAAOA/pgrAYMTLN60/s320/firstofthree.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578846114141641410" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">w.i.p. I won't go into the details about why this image is so important or why I feel compelled to try to answer her over and over and over again. This has been an ongoing interest that I have had. Here are some of the phases that she and I went through.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2b-N9mOUm3Q/TURULHfi-AI/AAAAAAAAALk/HpCq8EbD1nw/s1600/litho.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 277px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2b-N9mOUm3Q/TURULHfi-AI/AAAAAAAAALk/HpCq8EbD1nw/s400/litho.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5567667589303433218" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Six Color Lithograph from Sophomore year. If you don't know, Tamarind is more or less the resurrection site of American Lithography (Nathan Oliveria was also a teacher there). If you cut and copy the address site, you can watch her lecture "Life and Litho" and she has some sound advice. What I found to be the most amusing was in the first few minutes where she is literally crowned 'The Queen of Lithography'. It's worth watching.</div>farnanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05439608091860809567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7261257231768432538.post-61122487772402987822011-01-08T17:07:00.000-08:002011-01-08T17:13:03.076-08:00this thing<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2b-N9mOUm3Q/TSkKaPmn5TI/AAAAAAAAAJs/cEF62vwUrHE/s1600/fedup.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 217px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2b-N9mOUm3Q/TSkKaPmn5TI/AAAAAAAAAJs/cEF62vwUrHE/s400/fedup.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559986660946994482" /></a>While Rives BFK paper is excellent for printmaking, it's not very good for drawing, at least not in the way that I can draw, and it is more difficult working with 100% cotton. I never work in the studios at 301 for several reasons.<div>1. That's not a studio, it's a cubicle. If I wanted to work in a cubicle, I wouldn't have chosen art in the first place. </div><div>2. I can't smoke in the 301. Fill in the blanks where you may. </div><div>3. I'm too cheap to cough up the $30 for a key and I'm a nocturnal creature.</div><div>4. The florescent lighting coupled with the overhead fans creates this weird flicker that makes me feel like I'm in prison.</div><div>5. ------</div><div>6. I never want to be separated from my work, have my studio be something that I can 'take a break from', always have work on the brain. My studio becomes a bedroom at the end of the night when I take my mattress from the hallway and put it down to sleep. With this sort of set up, my work is the last thing I see when I close my eyes and the first thing I see when I wake up. I love that. </div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>I also collect, rescue, and trade work with other people, and have a working system for a set up. </div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>What I have left to do in the studio (I want to be done hopefully by the end of today or tomorrow) is finish skimming the working walls until they are baby-bottom smooth, prime, then paint. I'll put up the photos when everything is done, it really is a sweet set up. </div>farnanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05439608091860809567noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7261257231768432538.post-24770328169702996112010-12-12T10:22:00.000-08:002010-12-12T10:36:04.561-08:00Kind of the top ten. You know how when there is a little nick in a canvas and just the right pull at the wrong moment can rip it apart? Paper more or less works in the same way. It was a fairly big drawing, three by four feet. Normally, gesso-ing the back of the paper makes it more resistant to tearing, but there was ONE. SMALL. vulnerable spot on the back of the paper (top and center where the two figures are divided) that was not covered in gesso. Laziness on my part? In a rush to start drawing? A friend was helping me put it up on my wall so I could get back to work on it. He, not really knowing how to handle paper (is that possible?), put unnecessary macho force while bracing it against the wall with pressure that was southbound. <div>damnit </div><div>damnit </div><div>damnit</div><div>That painting never stood a chance, it split </div><div>right</div><div>down </div><div>the </div><div>middle.</div><div>Perfectly down the middle, Rebecca and I were split apart, it couldn't have been more (vomit) poetic than if it had been in some Lifetime movie. I mean, the tear didn't touch either of the figures, perfectly demolished. </div><div>When something like that happens, you think you'll let out a cry or react, I couldn't. Like, when you get some really bad injury, the kind that makes you have to go to the ER, right between the moment it happens and when the pain kicks in there's this split second of "That didn't just happen". All I could do was just stand there silently dumbfounded. </div><div>The source materials are still around, this painting is long gone, I had no desire to save it. kidding myself like that would have just added insult to injury. This painting is going to happen again, damnit!</div><div>ugh, damnit<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2b-N9mOUm3Q/TNhmBCEqujI/AAAAAAAAAGM/RFLnCoDt4VY/s1600/beck%26me.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2b-N9mOUm3Q/TNhmBCEqujI/AAAAAAAAAGM/RFLnCoDt4VY/s400/beck%26me.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537287909774375474" /></a><br /></div>farnanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05439608091860809567noreply@blogger.com0
